Arrival in South Luangwa
On arrival at Lusaka Airport, you will connect onto a domestic scheduled flight to Mfuwe Airport, where a guide from Kafunta Safaris will welcome you and take you to Kafunta River Lodge — your home during the first four nights of your exclusive South Luangwa safari.
Kafunta River Lodge
Kafunta River Lodge is a classic Zambian safari lodge, combining all the essentials for a great safari including its spectacular location at the edge of the floodplain. Beyond the plain lies the Luangwa River — one of the best game-viewing areas in magical South Luangwa National Park, the premier park in Zambia and one of the finest in Africa.
Fully renovated in 2019, the lodge offers a relaxed atmosphere and great attention to detail. Each of the eight luxury private chalets stands on raised wooden platforms with thatched roofs and private viewing decks, pleasantly decorated to match the local style. Two spacious luxury suites feature extra-large en-suite bathrooms, a cosy mezzanine with day beds and an open balcony.
Central to the lodge is a relaxing lounge and dining area, thatched in traditional African style. Extensive decks lead to stunning, undisturbed views of the plain and its frequent wild visitors — from sofas near the wild mango tree to reclining sunbeds by the infinity pool.

Pool, decks & floodplain views
So many stylish places to unwind: the sofas near the wild mango tree, the cosy fireplace, or the reclining sunbeds by the infinity pool overlooking the game-rich plain.
Candlelit dining under African skies
When night comes, enjoy sumptuous candlelit meals under the vast African sky, in the company of hippos wallowing in the waterhole or white-tailed mongoose scurrying by.
Drinks by the Luangwa River
End each day with refreshing drinks served on the riverbank as the sun sets over the Luangwa Valley.
Game drive transfer to Island Bush Camp
After breakfast, your guide will take you on a game drive transfer to Island Bush Camp, where you will most likely arrive in time for lunch.
Island Bush Camp
Set under the shade of ancient mahogany trees on the banks of the Luangwa River, this authentic Zambian bush camp is the gateway to one of the most remote and unspoilt areas of South Luangwa National Park.
Island Bush Camp offers a pure wilderness experience with walking safaris at the core of its activities. Five open-fronted rooms on raised wooden decks overlook the main Luangwa River, built of grass and reed in the traditional remote Luangwa bush-camp style.
There are few other tourist facilities in the vicinity — this is one of the few camps where you will truly find yourself far from any other visitors. En-suite bathrooms have running cold water and flush toilets; hot water is delivered for bucket showers when you wish.
- Walking safaris (main activity)
- Limited game drives
- Special sundowners

Authentic bush camp living
Experience the romance of a traditional Luangwa bush camp — reed walls, mosquito netting and the sounds of the African night all around you.
Campfire by the river
Gather around a riverside campfire for drinks and stories as the bush settles into night.
Transfer to Three Rivers Camp
You will be transferred to Three Rivers Camp for the final two nights of this exclusive South Luangwa safari. Walking between the bush camps is an experience we strongly recommend.
Three Rivers Camp
Three Rivers Camp is a luxury tented safari camp set at the confluence of the Luangwa, Kapamba and Lusangazi Rivers in South Luangwa. The stylish tents sit under shady sausage trees facing the Luangwa River or the game-rich lagoon.
The latest addition to the Kafunta Safaris portfolio, Three Rivers Camp is exquisitely intimate with only five tents decorated with natural materials and earthy hues. Large gauzed windows embrace extensive views of the river and nearby lagoon. Each tent has its own wooden deck with comfy chairs, and en-suite bathrooms include indoor and outdoor showers, double sinks and flushing toilets.

Watch wildlife from your private deck
Relax on your tent's wooden deck and watch elephants, hippos and birdlife along the Luangwa River and lagoon.

Sleep-out experience
For the ultimate romantic bush experience, spend a night on the elevated star bed platform and fall asleep beneath the African sky.

The star bed platform offers an unforgettable way to experience the wilderness — lanterns glowing, mosquito net draped, and the Milky Way overhead.
